Viva Reports Traffic Decline and Capacity Adjustments in March 2026. Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier Viva Aerobús reported its preliminary traffic results for March 2026, reflecting a 1.6% year-over-year decrease in passenger numbers, with a total of 2.4 million travelers. This slight decline comes amid a complex operating environment for airlines, where demand patterns continue to fluctuate and external cost pressures remain significant. Despite the drop, the airline continues to demonstrate resilience by proactively adapting its operational strategy.

In response to these market dynamics, Viva reduced its total capacity, measured in available seat miles (ASMs), by 2.8% compared to March 2025. This adjustment included a 1.6% reduction in domestic capacity and a more pronounced 8.2% cut in international capacity. As a result, the airline reported a load factor of 84.5%, supported by strong domestic demand, which reached 86.2%. Meanwhile, the international segment posted a lower load factor of 76.4%, reflecting softer demand conditions in that market. These figures indicate a deliberate effort by the airline to optimize capacity deployment and maintain efficient load levels, even as it navigates an uncertain demand environment.

According to CEO Juan Carlos Zuazua, the airline’s performance in March was influenced by several key factors, including volatility in fuel prices, operational disruptions experienced in late February, and ongoing challenges related to grounded engines manufactured by Pratt & Whitney. These constraints have required airlines globally to rethink capacity planning and operational reliability. Looking ahead, Viva plans to maintain a cautious and flexible approach, continuously aligning its capacity with market demand while prioritizing operational stability. In doing so, the airline aims to safeguard its performance and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving aviation landscape.
