Tocumen International Airport Launches $22.2M Tender for Terminal 1 Modernization. Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama is moving forward with a public tender for the comprehensive modernization of its Terminal 1. Carrying a reference price of $22.2 million USD (Balboas) and an estimated execution timeframe of 24 months, the project encompasses architectural studies, design, and structural upgrades across landside and airside areas on Levels 100, 200, and 300, as well as Satellites A and B.

Project Scope & Infrastructure Upgrades

  • ✈ Fire Protection & Safety: Implementation of a new NFPA 13 wet sprinkler system, Class A addressable smart fire detection, and emergency-powered mechanical smoke extraction.
  • ✈ HVAC & Telecoms: Complete overhaul of air conditioning infrastructure following ASHRAE energy-efficiency and air-quality standards, alongside modernized telecommunications networks.
  • ✈ Passenger Experience & Amenities: Replacement of ceilings, flooring, and gate area carpets; rollout of LED lighting, updated check-in and boarding furniture, 14 accessible restroom modules, and new nursing rooms.
  • ✈ Terminal Technology: Installation of modernized Flight Information Display Systems (FIDS), upgraded CCTV, and advanced access control systems.

Uninterrupted Operations

Tocumen General Manager José Ruiz Blanco highlighted that construction will proceed in phased stages to ensure Terminal 1 remains fully operational 24/7 throughout the 24-month schedule. Celebrating its 48th anniversary on August 15, Terminal 1 remains a core pillar for Panama’s air connectivity across North America, Latin America, Europe, and the Caribbean.
