Colombian Government Launches Airport Modernization Plan for Medellín and Rionegro. The Colombian National Government, through the Aeronáutica Civil de Colombia and the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI), has officially launched a major airport modernization plan aimed at strengthening infrastructure in Medellín and Rionegro. The initiative includes a total investment of $397.648 billion pesos and seeks to increase the capacity of José María Córdova International Airport from 14 million to 17 million passengers annually. This intervention responds to the sustained growth in passenger demand, as the airport closed 2025 with 14.2 million travelers, surpassing projections that had estimated reaching 13.5 million passengers only by 2036. The investment will be distributed across several categories, including CAPEX for infrastructure works ($164.611 billion), OPEX for operations ($206.973 billion), REPEX for asset replacement ($3.839 billion), and taxes totaling $22.223 billion. Authorities emphasized that the works will not alter the current concession timeline, which is set to run at least until May 2032.

Key projects include the expansion of aircraft platforms (phases 1 and 2) with an investment exceeding $65 billion to improve aircraft movement efficiency, as well as the modernization of the baggage handling system (BHS), incorporating advanced technology. Additional improvements will focus on strengthening security and control processes, enhancing domestic and international filters, expanding immigration areas, and developing new connection centers. The overall goal is to transform the passenger experience while reinforcing operational safety and positioning the Medellín region as a major air connectivity hub in northwestern Colombia. With these developments, the government reaffirms its commitment to boosting tourism, improving connectivity, and supporting economic growth in the Antioquia region.
