Copa Airlines celebrated the promotion of 29 pilots to the rank of captain, marking one of the most significant milestones in their professional careers as they take on greater responsibilities operating the airline’s Boeing 737 fleet. The promotions come as the carrier continues expanding its route network and adding new aircraft to support growing demand across the Americas.
According to Bolívar Domínguez, Vice President of Flight Operations at Copa Airlines, the development of new captains is essential to meeting both current and future operational needs. He highlighted that as the airline grows its fleet and destinations, it requires highly trained pilots capable of leading the cockpit with strong decision-making skills, operational experience and commitment to the highest safety standards. The promotion process, he noted, reflects Copa Airlines’ strategy of developing internal talent to maintain a safe, efficient and reliable operation.

To qualify for the rank of captain, first officers must complete an extensive training and evaluation program that includes academic instruction, simulator sessions and supervised flight operations. The process, validated by Panama’s Civil Aviation Authority (AAC), also requires pilots to meet strict operational standards, including minimum flight hours, experience at special airports, theoretical and practical examinations, and interviews with airline leadership teams. Beyond technical expertise, the program evaluates leadership capabilities and the ability to manage complex operational scenarios.
The newly promoted captains have between eight and 17 years of experience at Copa Airlines, averaging a decade of service within the company. Among them, four graduated from ALAS, Copa Airlines’ pilot academy, while two began their careers as cabin crew members, reflecting the airline’s focus on internal professional development opportunities.
