Qantas Accelerates Fleet Transformation: A380 Phase-Out and Expansion into Ultra-Long-Haul Flights. Qantas Group has presented its latest financial results alongside a major operational reconfiguration focused on fleet modernization and expanding its corporate travel footprint. A key highlight of this strategy is the phased retirement of its flagship Airbus A380 fleet starting in 2028, replacing the superjumbos with more efficient, long-range, next-generation aircraft.

Fleet Retirement and Financial Strategy

The decision to phase out the A380 is driven by rising maintenance costs and spare parts challenges for the out-of-production aircraft. Qantas estimates that replacing the A380s with Airbus A350-1000ULR and Boeing 787 aircraft will optimize cash flow by approximately AUD $300 million by 2031 while boosting profitability per departure through a higher ratio of premium seating.

Project Sunrise and Product Upgrades

  • ✈ Project Sunrise Launch: The carrier will receive its first Airbus A350-1000ULR next April, aiming to launch non-stop Sydney–London flights in October.

  • ✈ Cabin Enhancements: Boeing 787 aircraft joining the fleet from FY2028 will feature next-generation business class suites equipped with sliding privacy doors and larger entertainment screens.

Financial and Commercial Highlights

Strong domestic and international demand to Europe helped offset high global fuel costs. Meanwhile, Qantas Loyalty achieved record award-ticket redemptions, and low-cost subsidiary Jetstar expanded its short- and medium-haul footprint. To reward operational performance, approximately 25,000 non-executive employees will receive AUD $1,000 in group shares.
