Romania Orders 12 Airbus H225M Helicopters to Modernize Military Fleet. The government of Romania has finalized a procurement agreement to purchase 12 Airbus H225M multi-role helicopters aimed at upgrading its armed forces capabilities. The contract was executed in coordination with France‘s General Directorate of Armament (DGA) under the European Commission‘s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) initiative, a funding framework designed to accelerate member states’ defense investments and strengthen European industrial output.

The incoming rotorcraft will join the Romanian Air Force to begin replacing its aging fleet of IAR-330 Puma helicopters, an aircraft type originally manufactured locally under license from Aerospatiale. The H225M fleet will handle both conventional military transport duties and specialized operational missions. This order marks the country’s second procurement under the SAFE umbrella, following a prior agreement covering seven H160 and five H145 helicopters for public service roles, alongside an earlier naval purchase of two H215M units.

The production agreement incorporates direct industrial collaboration with IAR, Romania‘s sole domestic helicopter manufacturer. Matthieu Louvot, Chief Executive Officer of Airbus Helicopters, noted that the order helps reinforce local aerospace capabilities. Airbus has maintained an industrial footprint in Romania for more than two decades across its three primary divisions, providing aircraft fleet support, systems engineering, and structural component manufacturing.
Worldwide, more than 350 H225 and H225M aircraft remain active across commercial and military sectors, logging over one million total flight hours. By adopting the platform, Romania joins an international group of H225M military operators that includes France, Brazil, Hungary, Indonesia, Iraq, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, the Netherlands, Singapore, and Thailand.
