Avianca Seeks Approval for New Colombia–Fort Lauderdale Routes. Avianca submitted a request to aviation authorities seeking approval to expand its international network with two new routes between Colombia and the United States. According to the filing submitted on May 11, 2026, the airline plans to add nonstop services connecting Barranquilla and Fort Lauderdale, as well as Cali and Fort Lauderdale, both operating as round-trip routes. The proposal is part of Avianca’s continued strategy to strengthen its presence in the Florida market, one of the most important destinations for Colombian travelers.

Under the proposal, Avianca plans to operate both routes with Airbus A319, Airbus A320 and Airbus A320neo aircraft, offering seven weekly frequencies on each service. The airline also requested third and fourth freedom traffic rights, which would allow it to transport passengers and cargo directly between Colombia and the United States. If approved, the new operations would significantly increase connectivity between Colombia’s Caribbean and southwestern regions and the South Florida metropolitan area.

The expansion would provide travelers with additional options to access the Fort Lauderdale-Miami region, an area with strong tourism demand and a large Latin American community. The proposed routes would also reinforce Avianca’s regional network strategy by improving international connectivity from secondary Colombian cities and expanding its short- and medium-haul operations across the Americas. The request reflects the airline’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its position in key international markets while responding to growing passenger demand between Colombia and the United States.
