The artwork was conceived as a tribute to Uruguayan identity and features portraits of some of the country’s most influential historical and cultural figures. Among them are Alfredo Zitarrosa, China Zorrilla, Carlos Páez Vilaró, José Pedro Varela, Gonzalo “Gonchi” Rodríguez, Clemente Estable, Juana de Ibarbourou, and Rosa Luna. These personalities were originally selected through a public vote in which more than 11,500 people participated.

For the restoration project, the companies once again partnered with Colectivo Licuado, the same artistic collective responsible for the original creation of the mural. The restoration covered more than 1,000 square meters and required approximately 600 liters of paint, including specialized anti-graffiti coatings designed to protect the mural from vandalism and environmental damage. Matías Carluccio, commercial manager of Aeropuertos Uruguay, explained that the renovation aims to strengthen the country’s cultural identity for the thousands of passengers who travel through the airport every day. He noted that the initiative also reflects the airport’s commitment to tourism, public art, and the cultural enrichment of public spaces.

When it was first unveiled, the initiative was declared of ministerial interest by Uruguay’s Ministry of Education and Culture and received support from several government institutions connected to tourism, transportation, and culture. With this restoration, Carrasco International Airport continues consolidating its position as a space that combines art, national identity, and the travel experience for visitors arriving in Uruguay.
