Newark Leads Northeast Airports in On-Time Performance After Major Operational Recovery.Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) has emerged as the most punctual major airport in the northeastern United States in 2026, marking a remarkable turnaround from the operational challenges that disrupted its performance just a year ago. The achievement highlights the airport’s successful recovery following a period marked by air traffic control staffing shortages, FAA system outages, and runway construction projects that caused widespread delays, cancellations, and diversions.

The recovery has been driven by coordinated efforts between the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation, which implemented measures to modernize airport technology, increase staffing levels, and temporarily reduce flight volumes to better align schedules with Newark’s operational capacity. As a result, United Airlines, Newark’s largest carrier, recorded its best on-time performance during April and May while transporting nearly 5.8 million passengers through the airport. The airline also reported a strong start to the summer travel season, carrying a record three million travelers across its network during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, with nearly 70 percent of customers arriving on schedule.

Newark remains one of the most important hubs in United Airlines’ global network, connecting passengers to nearly 320 destinations across North America, South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The airport also serves as a key international gateway, offering nonstop flights to 42 destinations across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and India. United has further strengthened its international presence with new routes to Split, Bari, Glasgow, and Santiago de Compostela, while upcoming services to Seoul and St. Croix will expand its network even further. Alongside its route growth, the airline continues to invest heavily in customer experience through initiatives such as Starlink high-speed satellite Wi-Fi, enhanced in-flight entertainment, larger overhead bins, and advanced digital tools designed to improve convenience and reliability for travelers.
