The new route is part of Iberia’s Flight Plan 2030 strategy, which aims to consolidate the airline’s leadership in connectivity between Europe and Latin America while enhancing customer experience. With the addition of Monterrey, Iberia will offer more than 53,000 seats on the route during 2026 and will connect travelers from northeastern Mexico to over 100 destinations across Spain, Europe, Africa, and Asia through its hub at Madrid-Barajas Airport. The launch also expands Iberia’s presence in Mexico, where it now serves both Mexico City and Monterrey directly, providing a combined annual capacity of more than 820,000 seats, representing an 8% increase compared to the previous year.

To commemorate the inaugural flight, Iberia organized a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Madrid-Barajas Airport attended by senior airline executives and airport representatives. Passengers traveling on the first flights were treated to a special onboard celebration featuring traditional Mexican flavors, including margaritas served in the Business cabin and a selection of Mexican sweets offered throughout the aircraft. The airline also distributed commemorative gifts to travelers.
The launch comes despite ongoing challenges in the aviation industry, including rising fuel costs, demonstrating Iberia’s commitment to its expansion plans and confidence in the growing demand between Spain and Mexico. The airline further strengthened its position in the Mexican market through a recent partnership with Viva, allowing passengers traveling via Monterrey to connect seamlessly to 32 destinations across Mexico. Additionally, customers can take advantage of Iberia’s Stopover Hola Madrid program, enabling them to spend up to nine nights in the Spanish capital at no additional airfare cost before continuing to their final destination.
