TAP Air Portugal adopts new aircraft coating technology to reduce emissions. Following a series of successful trials conducted in partnership with AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings, the airline confirmed that it will progressively implement the Aerobase UPD coating system across its aircraft. The new formulation reduces paint thickness without compromising durability or finish quality. The evaluation began with an Airbus A320, where the new application process reduced the aircraft’s weight by 26 kilograms. A second aircraft was subsequently painted using the same technology, confirming the positive results and supporting its wider implementation.
In addition to lowering aircraft weight, the new coating process eliminates one complete application and drying stage, reducing maintenance time while improving paint shop productivity. The formulation also delivers a more uniform finish and greater resistance to paint sagging during application. According to TAP Air Portugal, once the technology is deployed across the entire fleet, it is expected to save approximately 428 tonnes of fuel annually, prevent around 1,353 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions each year, and reduce operating costs by more than €500,000 annually.

The airline believes the initiative demonstrates how relatively small technical improvements can deliver significant environmental and financial benefits when implemented across an entire operation. The project forms part of TAP Air Portugal’s broader sustainability strategy, reinforcing the airline’s commitment to improving fuel efficiency, reducing emissions, and adopting innovative technologies that contribute to more environmentally responsible aviation operations.
