Matecaña International Airport in Pereira will remain temporarily closed to commercial flight operations as its reopening, originally scheduled for this weekend, has been postponed without a set date. While the airside infrastructure (runways and taxiways) has passed technical inspections with approval from Aerocivil, severe structural damage inside the passenger terminal requires further repairs and compliance with new technical guidelines established by airlines and aviation authorities.

To gradually restore air connectivity, airport management is executing a contingency plan to launch limited operations, scaling down from its pre-earthquake average of 60 daily flights to approximately 15 daily operations. All passenger processing will temporarily shift to the first floor, where check-in equipment from the second level has been reinstalled, while security checkpoints and temporary waiting lounges will occupy the former baggage claim area. Because the facility will operate with only two scaled-down waiting rooms, airport authorities have advised travelers to arrive without accompanying family members to prevent overcrowding.

Regarding infrastructure repairs, the terminal suffered total operational loss of its escalators and elevators, along with extensive damage to drop ceilings across the second and third floors, which must be removed and redesigned under safety standards backed by active insurance policies. Additionally, international flights face an extra technical hurdle due to the collapse of a downtown telecommunications tower during an aftershock, which previously transmitted migration data for international processing.
Despite these technical challenges, airport management continues to coordinate with commercial carriers to restore both domestic and international routes as quickly as possible.
