Air China Boeing 747-8 Grounded at JFK Following Fuel Truck Refueling Incident. An Air China Boeing 747-89L (registration B-2486) suffered structural damage and a fuel leak during refueling operations at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). The incident occurred between the night of August 30 and early morning of August 31 as the aircraft was preparing to operate flight CA982 to Beijing (PEK). The departure was ultimately canceled, and the Jumbo Jet remains grounded at JFK.

Incident Breakdown and Emergency Response

  • ✈ Sequence of Events: While the pressure-refueling procedure was underway, the fuel truck moved away while the delivery hose remained attached to the aircraft’s fuel port. The sudden strain damaged the fitting and port connection, causing fuel to spill onto the apron.
  • ✈ On-Scene Measures: Airport fire services responded to the stand to wash down the spilled fuel and secure the area.
  • ✈ Operational Impact: Passengers who had already boarded around 1:00 AM were asked to deplane. The flight was formally canceled in the morning, with passengers instructed to collect their baggage.

The aircraft is one of the few remaining passenger-configured Boeing 747-8s in global commercial service. Maintenance personnel and authorities are evaluating the extent of the damage to the fuel system before issuing clearances for repairs and return to service.
