Copa Airlines Welcomes 65 New Aircraft Maintenance Technicians in Panama. Copa Airlines celebrated the graduation of 65 new aircraft maintenance technicians from its Aeronautical Technicians Academy (ATA), who will join the carrier’s technical operations following comprehensive theoretical and practical instruction in aircraft systems maintenance and inspection. This graduating class includes 21 specialists in engine maintenance and 10 women, representing 15% of the cohort. Since ATA‘s inception in 2014, the academy has trained 269 technical professionals, many of whom are currently employed across various technical departments within the airline.

Fully funded by Copa Airlines through the Fundación Despega, the tuition-free program provides students with a US$350 monthly stipend alongside transportation, insurance, uniforms, and study materials. Ranging from two to four years in duration depending on the track, the curriculum prepares trainees to perform maintenance and inspection tasks in accordance with national and international regulatory standards. Currently, nearly 90% of the maintenance for the Copa Airlines fleet is conducted in Panama, primarily at its main Maintenance Center located at Tocumen International Airport (PTY).
Anticipated network growth and fleet expansion are expected to drive higher demand for specialized technicians in the coming years. Rafael Samudio, Vice President of Technical Operations at Copa Airlines, emphasized that the airline requires an increasing number of skilled professionals and is actively cultivating that talent locally through ATA. The carrier also maintains educational partnerships with the Instituto Técnico Don Bosco and the Instituto Técnico Superior Especializado (ITSE), while enrollment for new ATA cohorts slated to begin training in February 2027 is now open.
