TAP Air Portugal Launches New Lisbon–Santa Maria Route. Portuguese carrier TAP Air Portugal has officially launched a new route connecting Lisbon with Santa Maria Island in the Azores, further expanding its domestic network across Portugal. The inaugural flight departed on Thursday, May 21, marking the beginning of a twice-weekly operation scheduled for Thursdays and Sundays. With this new service, TAP continues strengthening air connectivity between mainland Portugal and the Atlantic archipelago while supporting tourism growth and regional mobility.

Flights depart Lisbon at 12:30 p.m. and arrive in Santa Maria at 2:05 p.m., while return services leave the island at 3:15 p.m. and land at Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport at 6:35 p.m., all in local time. In addition, TAP will adjust aircraft capacity according to seasonal demand. Between June 15 and September 15, the route will be operated with Airbus A320neo aircraft configured for 174 passengers, responding to the increase in summer travel demand. During the remainder of the year, the airline will deploy Embraer 190 aircraft with capacity for 106 passengers, ensuring operational efficiency throughout the low season.

The new Lisbon–Santa Maria route is part of TAP’s broader expansion strategy in the Azores. Recently, the airline also announced a new service between Porto and Terceira, scheduled to begin operations on July 1. These routes complement TAP’s existing flights from Lisbon to Ponta Delgada and Terceira, reinforcing the airline’s position as one of the main carriers connecting the Azores with mainland Portugal. As a result, TAP will now offer a total of 48 weekly flights between continental Portugal and the Azores, improving accessibility, boosting tourism, and supporting the economic development of the islands.
