Air France Celebrates 30 Years of Its Paris-Charles de Gaulle Hub. Air France is marking the 30th anniversary of its hub at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, celebrating three decades of innovation, operational efficiency, and network expansion. Officially inaugurated on March 31, 1996, the hub introduced a synchronized “bank” flight system that significantly reduced connection times and transformed Paris-Charles de Gaulle into one of Europe’s leading global connecting airports. Within its first six months of operation, the model increased traffic by 20% without requiring additional aircraft.

Today, the Paris-Charles de Gaulle hub serves as the operational heart of Air France’s global network. The airline carried more than 40 million passengers through the hub in 2025, accounting for over half of the airport’s total traffic. The operation includes three passenger terminals, a major cargo facility, and 300,000 square meters of aircraft maintenance infrastructure. Every day, the Hub Control Center coordinates up to 800 flights, manages approximately 100,000 passengers and 90,000 pieces of baggage, supported by 5,300 dedicated employees working alongside airport partners and public authorities.

Over the past three decades, Air France has continuously invested in digitalization and customer experience. Self-service kiosks, automated baggage drop facilities, biometric boarding gates, and real-time digital tools have streamlined the passenger journey, while the airline is currently developing more than 80 artificial intelligence applications to further personalize customer service. Premium services have also expanded through multilingual assistance teams, Kids Solo for unaccompanied minors, the Saphir assistance program for passengers with disabilities, and upgraded lounges, including the redesigned La Première experience introduced in 2024.

Sustainability and intermodality remain central to the future of the hub. Alongside fleet modernization and the increased use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Air France continues to electrify its ground operations and expand its Train + Air partnership with SNCF Voyageurs, allowing customers to combine rail and air travel under a single reservation. Looking ahead, the airline expects further improvements with the arrival of the CDG Express rail service in 2027, reinforcing Paris-Charles de Gaulle’s role as one of Europe’s most important aviation hubs while continuing to enhance efficiency, connectivity, and the passenger experience.
