The expansion, which has received all required regulatory approvals, also marks the beginning of a reciprocal codeshare agreement, allowing Emirates to place its flight code on South African Airways-operated services for the first time. Under the expanded partnership, Emirates passengers will be able to book seamless itineraries connecting to three domestic routes within South Africa:
Johannesburg–Cape Town, Johannesburg–Durban, and Johannesburg–Port Elizabeth. The agreement also adds six regional destinations served by SAA from Johannesburg, including Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gaborone in Botswana, Windhoek in Namibia, Lusaka in Zambia, as well as Harare and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Travelers will benefit from a single ticket, coordinated connections, and through-checked baggage to their final destination.

The partnership between Emirates and South African Airways dates back to 1997 and has become one of the Dubai-based airline’s longest-standing commercial alliances. Until now, the agreement enabled SAA to place its code on Emirates-operated flights between Dubai and Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, while also providing access to dozens of destinations across Emirates’ global network. The addition of Emirates’ code to SAA-operated flights significantly expands travel options for both business and leisure passengers.
According to Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, the expanded partnership reinforces the airline’s long-term commitment to South Africa and to improving connectivity across the African continent. Matshela Seshibe, Interim Chief Executive Officer of South African Airways, said the agreement will better connect people, businesses, and economic opportunities while further strengthening Johannesburg’s role as one of Africa’s leading hubs for travel, trade, and tourism.
