The project primarily included the full rehabilitation of Runway 08-26, involving the application of over 40,000 tons of polymer-modified asphalt, as well as the adjustment of runway thresholds to meet current regulations. In addition, the airfield lighting system was upgraded with energy-efficient LED technology, replacing older halogen fixtures. The works also incorporated an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system and advanced weather monitoring tools, including ice detection systems and MARWIS technology, which provide real-time data on surface conditions. Furthermore, the existing commercial apron was completely demolished and replaced with a new concrete structure, expanding operational capacity. On the landside, the terminal’s pre-boarding area was increased by 50%, improving passenger comfort and adding new service options.

From an operational standpoint, these upgrades significantly enhance both safety and efficiency, particularly under the challenging weather conditions typical of the region. Moreover, the integration of advanced technologies and the reinforcement of the “Snow Plan” improve resource management and risk prevention. As a result, Río Grande is now equipped with a more modern and resilient airport infrastructure, capable of supporting future traffic growth, which exceeded 143,000 passengers in 2025. Ultimately, this investment not only strengthens airport operations but also contributes to regional economic development and national connectivity.
