Operation Icarus Strengthened Preparedness for Aviation Emergencies in Itagüí. The municipality of Itagüí conducted Operation Icarus on Saturday, July 11, an interagency emergency exercise designed to evaluate the response capabilities of local authorities and aviation stakeholders in the event of an aircraft accident outside the facilities of Medellín’s Olaya Herrera Airport. The drill took place at the Coltejer Administrative Headquarters of the Itagüí Mayor’s Office and brought together emergency responders, aviation organizations, and healthcare institutions.

The exercise simulated the crash of a Cessna 402 operating a flight from Quibdó to Medellín. According to the scenario, the aircraft experienced a technical failure during its approach to the airport, resulting in an impact in a semi-urban area. The simulation involved 18 victims, including passengers, crew members, and people on the ground, while also testing response procedures for a fuel spill, a partial fire, and a mass-casualty incident.
The drill provided an opportunity to assess the procedures established in Olaya Herrera Airport’s Emergency Plan, as well as the coordination among the participating agencies. Emergency teams evaluated response times, interagency communication, rescue operations, pre-hospital medical care, and operational safety protocols under realistic conditions.

The exercise involved emergency services, local authorities, healthcare providers, aviation companies, flight training organizations, and members of the Olaya Herrera Airport SMS Alliance Committee. These recurring drills are intended to strengthen coordination and ensure that all participating organizations remain prepared to respond effectively to a real-world aviation emergency.
