Qantas to Launch Non-Stop Sydney–New York Flights in 2028. Qantas has announced it will launch non-stop flights between Sydney and New York starting in mid-2028, marking the first direct commercial air link between Australia and the United States city. The new route forms part of Project Sunrise, the airline’s ambitious ultra-long-haul flight program.
Tickets for the inaugural flight will go on sale in August 2027. According to Qantas, the non-stop service will reduce total travel time by approximately three hours compared to existing one-stop itineraries, with an estimated flight time of around 18 hours.

New York becomes the second confirmed Project Sunrise route following Sydney–London, which is scheduled to launch non-stop service in October 2027. Qantas first operated flights to New York in 1958 as part of its round-the-world service and currently offers a daily connecting flight between both cities via Auckland.
Project Sunrise flights will be operated using specially configured Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft engineered for ultra-long-range flights. The aircraft feature an additional 20,000-liter fuel tank, pushing operational range beyond 16,000 kilometers and enabling non-stop sectors of up to 22 hours.

Qantas will take delivery of 12 Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, each configured with 238 seats across four cabin classes. The first jet is scheduled for delivery in April 2027. The flight testing program reached a key milestone with a 24-hour and 24-minute test flight between Melbourne and Toulouse, highlighted by Qantas as the longest non-stop flight completed by a commercial airliner.
In preparation for launch, Qantas has begun pilot training using Australia‘s first A350 simulator. Over 360 pilots and 1,200 cabin crew members will undergo training to operate the Project Sunrise fleet.
