The GDP certification is based on the Good Distribution Practices for pharmaceutical products established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and was awarded by independent auditor SGS. The recognition validates compliance with strict requirements for handling, storage, distribution, and transportation of pharmaceutical products, ensuring end-to-end cargo integrity across the supply chain.
“Becoming the first airline in the Americas to achieve Good Distribution Practices (GDP) Pharma certification for our operations in Madrid and Barcelona marks a major milestone in our strategy to further strengthen specialized pharmaceutical transport,” stated Diogo Elias, CEO of Avianca Cargo.
Madrid and Barcelona will serve as strategic hubs for consolidating pharmaceutical cargo originating from across Europe, enabling Avianca Cargo to enhance operational control and deliver a specialized, traceable logistics network connected to key international markets. Avianca Cargo‘s teams completed the auditing process in just six months, compared to the industry standard of 12 months.

This achievement complements the airline’s IATA CEIV Pharma certification and aligns with the broader pharmaceutical strategy of Abra Group and Gollog. By 2027, the group plans to extend GDP Pharma certification to strategic stations in London, Paris, and Lisbon, expanding its specialized European network.
