Global Air Passenger Demand Slips 0.8% in August Driven by Middle East Contraction. According to data released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), global air passenger demand (measured in RPKs) fell 0.8% in August 2026 compared to August 2025. International passenger demand dropped 0.9% (+1.3% excluding the Middle East), while domestic traffic contracted by 0.5%. The overall global decline was heavily influenced by Middle East carriers, which reported a sharp 14.6% year-over-year drop in demand, interrupting their recent recovery trajectory following regional geopolitical instability.

Across international regional markets, Latin America and the Caribbean and Africa led growth, both posting a 6.7% increase in international demand (+5.3% and +4.4% in their total markets, respectively). Europe expanded by 2.1%, driven by the strong Europe–Asia corridor (+12.2%), whereas North America fell 1.7% and Asia-Pacific slipped 0.1% internationally.

In domestic markets, passenger volume contracted in India (-7.5%), the United States (-2.9%), and Japan (-2.0%), while China (+5.8%), Brazil (+4.3%), and Australia (+2.3%) recorded positive gains.

“Global demand for air transport contracted by 0.8% compared to August 2025 as the recovery trajectory for carriers in the Middle East was interrupted,” stated Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA‘s Senior Vice President of Sustainability and Chief Economist.

She noted potential headwinds from reduced purchasing power due to higher energy costs and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, while highlighting cautious optimism for October forward schedules with a 2.0% increase in available capacity.
