Emirates Surpasses 100 Retrofitted Aircraft, Accelerates Fleet Modernization Program. Emirates has reached a major milestone in its fleet renewal strategy by completing the retrofit of 100 aircraft under the airline industry’s largest cabin modernization program. Since the initiative began in November 2022, the airline has refurbished 47 Airbus A380s and 53 Boeing 777s at Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai, as part of a US$5 billion investment.
Originally covering 105 aircraft, the program has since been expanded to 219 airplanes, aiming to deliver a more consistent and enhanced onboard experience across all cabin classes. Before the end of 2026, Emirates expects to add approximately 20 more aircraft to the retrofit program, reinforcing one of the most ambitious fleet modernization projects in commercial aviation.

The refurbishment goes far beyond cosmetic upgrades. Each aircraft is completely stripped down before thousands of cabin components are replaced and the interior is rebuilt. Over the past 44 months, more than 400 engineers and technicians have dedicated 4.4 million work hours to the project, completing an average of 28 aircraft per year. One of the most significant improvements has been the expansion of the airline’s Premium Economy cabin, with the installation of more than 3,800 new seats, allowing the product to be introduced on additional routes across the network.
Emirates has also developed proprietary tools and processes in collaboration with more than 100 specialized suppliers to streamline the retrofit process while maintaining the airline’s high quality standards. The next phase of the program is scheduled to begin in October 2026, featuring the installation of 4K HDR10+ OLED entertainment screens and the new lightweight Safran Z400 seats, designed to enhance passenger comfort and improve operational efficiency.

Alongside the modernization program, Emirates continues to advance its sustainability initiatives by recycling materials removed from refurbished aircraft. These materials have been repurposed into products under the Aircrafted by Emirates collection and transformed into more than 4,000 backpacks distributed to children in 11 countries. Through this combination of innovation, investment, and environmental responsibility, Emirates continues to strengthen its position as one of the world’s most modern and competitive airlines.
