Iberia Celebrates 80 Years Since Its First Flight Between Madrid and Buenos Aires. On September 22, Iberia marks 80 years since its inaugural flight between Madrid and Buenos Aires, an operation that launched the Spanish airline’s presence in Latin America and established the first commercial air link between Europe and the region. The first passenger and crew flight was completed on October 15, 1946.

The historic flight was operated using a Douglas DC-4 aircraft and required approximately 36 hours of travel time due to technical stops in Villa Cisneros, Natal, and Rio de Janeiro before reaching Buenos Aires. At the time, a one-way ticket from Madrid was priced at 11,435 pesetas, while a round-trip ticket cost 20,583 pesetas. Out of Buenos Aires, a one-way ticket was priced at 3,381 Argentine pesos.

To mark the occasion, Iberia prepared a special culinary surprise for passengers flying between both cities today. On flights departing Buenos Aires, options featuring dulce de leche are being offered, while flights from Madrid feature desserts inspired by the iconic Argentine ingredient.
“For Iberia, it is a point of pride to celebrate this milestone,” stated Marina Colunga, Commercial Director of Iberia for Latin America, emphasizing the route’s historical role in connecting people, families, and cultures across the Atlantic.
Eight decades later, Argentina remains a strategic market for Iberia. The airline currently operates three daily flights between Buenos Aires and Madrid, primarily utilizing Airbus A350 aircraft, the largest in its fleet. During June, July, and August of this year, the carrier expanded operations to up to four daily flights to meet peak summer demand.
