The Mayor of Trelew, Gerardo Merino, emphasized the strategic importance of the operation for the city’s commercial development and industrial expansion. Historically, cargo aircraft servicing the regional airport landed to deliver incoming goods but departed with empty holds on their return sectors. Through this operational breakthrough, local officials and logistics stakeholders aim to maximize aircraft payload capacity by filling outbound flights with regional exports, with long-term plans to scale capacity up to three weekly dedicated cargo flights.
The export flight aligns with a broader municipal and provincial strategy to establish Trelew as a primary logistics and trade hub serving southern Argentina. By leveraging the airport’s runway capabilities, cargo infrastructure, and geographic position, the local administration intends to streamline supply chain routes for high-demand regional industries. Beyond aquaculture and fresh salmon shipments, authorities plan to utilize the air corridor to export other key Patagonian commodities, including wild-caught seafood, processed wool, fresh cherries, and premium meat products.

According to municipal projections, developing scheduled air freight services enhances the economic viability of cargo flights while offering local producers direct access to global supply chains. The growth of air export operations is expected to stimulate regional commerce, attract private investment in warehousing and logistics, and generate direct and indirect employment opportunities for the population of Trelew and the broader Chubut region.
