American Airlines has appointed Brazilian executive Luiz Laham as Senior Manager of Operations for the Southern Cone, a move aimed at strengthening the airline’s operational management in South America and supporting the continued growth of its regional network. Laham succeeds Gonzalo Schames, who has been promoted to a leadership position in the United States, ensuring continuity in the airline’s operational strategy.

Based at São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), Laham will oversee American Airlines’ operations at five key airports: São Paulo (GRU), Rio de Janeiro (GIG), Buenos Aires/Ezeiza (EZE), Santiago de Chile (SCL) and Montevideo (MVD). He brings nearly two decades of experience in the aviation industry, having started his career in 2006 as a customer service supervisor at Guarulhos. He joined American Airlines in September 2025 and quickly took on a prominent role thanks to his leadership and operational management experience.

The appointment comes as American Airlines prepares its schedule for the 2026–2027 IATA winter season, during which the airline plans to operate more than 120 weekly flights between the United States and five destinations in the Southern Cone. The schedule will include up to 59 weekly flights to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, up to 42 weekly flights to Buenos Aires, up to 14 weekly flights to Santiago de Chile, and daily seasonal service to Montevideo, reinforcing the airline’s presence in one of its most important international markets.
