Air Canada Takes Delivery of First A321XLR, Boosting Long-Haul Capabilities. Air Canada has received its first Airbus A321XLR, marking a significant step in its fleet renewal strategy. The aircraft, leased from SMBC Aviation Capital, is the first of 30 units expected to join the airline. This delivery positions Air Canada as the first operator of the A321XLR in Canada, strengthening its ability to efficiently bridge the gap between short-haul narrowbody and long-haul widebody operations.

The A321XLR is set to play a central role in the airline’s network expansion, offering improved efficiency and flexibility on both existing and new long-haul routes. Powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, the aircraft features a two-cabin layout designed for enhanced passenger comfort, including 14 full-flat Signature Class seats with direct aisle access and 168 Economy seats. The Airspace cabin also introduces advanced in-flight entertainment with Bluetooth audio, full connectivity, larger overhead bins, and ambient lighting aimed at improving the onboard experience.

As the latest evolution of the A320neo Family, the A321XLR delivers a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles and approximately 30% lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous-generation aircraft, along with reduced emissions and noise. This extended capability will allow Air Canada to operate non-stop transatlantic flights from Montreal and Toronto to destinations such as Berlin, Toulouse, and Edinburgh, enhancing connectivity to secondary markets. Additionally, the aircraft can already operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), supporting Airbus’ goal of achieving 100% SAF capability by 2030 and reinforcing Air Canada’s long-term sustainability objectives.
