With this agreement, AirAsia becomes a new customer for the A220 and will also serve as the launch operator of a new 160-seat cabin configuration. The enhanced layout adds 10 extra seats through the installation of an additional overwing emergency exit on each side of the aircraft, improving efficiency and capacity. The A220 will complement AirAsia’s existing Airbus fleet and play a major role in expanding the airline’s network across ASEAN and Central Asia, while allowing larger aircraft to focus on longer-haul operations.

Tony Fernandes described the order as a strategic step that reflects the airline’s long-term ambitions and commitment to growth. Meanwhile, Lars Wagner stated that the A220 offers the ideal combination of low operating costs and extended range, enabling AirAsia to open new routes across Asia and beyond. The A220 is considered one of the most advanced aircraft in its category, capable of carrying between 100 and 160 passengers on flights of up to 6,700 kilometers. Like all Airbus aircraft, the A220 can already operate with up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), supporting the aviation industry’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and improve sustainability.
