Latin America Suffers Passenger Traffic Drop. Air passenger traffic in Latin America and the Caribbean reached 37.3 million passengers in June 2026, representing a year-over-year decline of 2.3%, equivalent to 893,000 fewer passengers. This marks the region’s first year-over-year monthly contraction since 2021. The downturn affected all three market segments: domestic traffic fell by 2.0%, intra-regional international traffic dropped 3.0%, and extra-regional international traffic decreased by 2.7%.

Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia, which account for nearly 65% of regional traffic, ended June with negative results, collectively transporting 517,000 fewer passengers than a year earlier. Mexico lost 293,000 passengers (-3.0%), while Argentina recorded a reduction of 238,000 passengers (-10.1%), driven primarily by a 17.0% drop in its domestic market. In contrast, Panama and the Dominican Republic helped moderate the overall decline, posting growths of 10.9% and 6.1%, respectively.

June’s performance also highlighted a gap between supply and demand: capacity, measured in ASKs, rose by 0.9%, while RPKs fell by 1.0%, lowering the average load factor to 81.6%, down 1.6 percentage points compared to June 2025. Despite the slowdown, the first-half balance remains positive, with 242.8 million passengers transported, representing a 3.4% growth and 8 million additional travelers compared to the same period in 2025. ALTA highlighted the need to foster policies that strengthen regional connectivity and competitiveness in the face of rising operational costs, particularly fuel.
