The airline will introduce the first-ever nonstop service between the continental United States and Sapporo, while also becoming the only U.S. carrier to offer direct flights between Chicago O’Hare and Tokyo-Narita. The new routes will strengthen United’s position as the leading U.S. airline in the Japan market and provide travelers across North America with additional options to connect throughout Asia.

Beginning December 11, United will launch a seasonal winter route between San Francisco and Sapporo with three weekly flights operated by Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The service will offer direct access to one of Japan’s most popular winter destinations, known for its ski resorts, Hokkaido seafood, Sapporo ramen and the world-famous Sapporo Snow Festival. Through its San Francisco hub, the airline will connect passengers from nearly 80 U.S. cities to northern Japan. In addition, on October 24, United will inaugurate a new daily year-round service between Chicago O’Hare and Tokyo-Narita aboard Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners. The route will complement the airline’s existing Tokyo-Haneda operation and further expand nonstop connectivity between the United States and the Asia-Pacific region.

According to United Airlines, the carrier transported more than 1.8 million passengers between the United States and Japan in 2025, exceeding the combined total of all other U.S. airlines. During the winter season, United plans to operate up to 13 daily flights from the continental United States to Japanese airports in Sapporo, Tokyo-Narita, Tokyo-Haneda and Osaka. Furthermore, the new Narita service will provide one-stop connections to 21 destinations across Asia-Pacific through United and its partner ANA, including Cebu, Guam, Kaohsiung, Palau, Saipan, Ulaanbaatar, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur. With these additions, United will connect five Japanese airports from its hubs in the United States and Guam, reinforcing its dominance across the Pacific network.
