Passengers on board reported hearing approximately 15 loud bangs, with some stating they observed flames coming from the right engine shortly after takeoff. The aircraft climbed to around 3,050 feet, entered a holding pattern, and safely returned to Houston, landing on Runway 8R. The aircraft, carrying 267 passengers and 13 crew members, had departed from Runway 15L when the crew stopped the climb due to the right GE90 engine anomaly. Although flames and loud bursts were observed, the crew reported no confirmed engine fire, but a severe engine malfunction. A replacement Boeing 777-200 (registration N798UA) completed the route to Munich with an approximate delay of 6 hours. The affected aircraft remained on the ground in Houston for over 40 hours following the incident while undergoing technical inspections.
