Lufthansa accelerates fleet and capacity cuts amid rising fuel costs.Lufthansa Group has announced the acceleration of its corporate strategy in response to the sharp increase in jet fuel prices—now double pre-Iran conflict levels—and growing labor-related challenges. As part of an initial package of measures, the airline will reduce its flight program across short-, medium-, and long-haul routes, while also advancing the modernization of its fleet. These actions aim to improve efficiency and mitigate cost pressures in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.

As an immediate step, Lufthansa will permanently remove the 27 aircraft operated by Lufthansa CityLine from its flight schedule, primarily Canadair CRJ jets that are reaching the end of their operational life and carry relatively high operating costs. In the second phase, long-haul capacity will be reduced by six aircraft, including the retirement of the remaining four Airbus A340-600 by October, marking the end of this model in Lufthansa’s fleet. Additionally, two Boeing 747-400 aircraft will remain grounded during the winter season, ahead of their planned full retirement next year. A further reduction of five aircraft is scheduled as part of the winter 2026/27 program within the core Lufthansa brand.

These measures are expected to generate significant fuel savings by removing less efficient aircraft from operations and reducing overall consumption. While Lufthansa has hedged around 80% of its fuel needs, the remaining 20%—purchased at higher market prices—will be reduced by approximately 10%. At the same time, the group will continue consolidating its short- and medium-haul operations across six hubs and implement additional administrative cost-saving targets. Lufthansa also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting affected employees by offering internal job opportunities, ensuring a structured and responsible transition within the group.
